The Origins of St George's DayUsually depicted as a lance bearing warrior on horseback, saving a maiden from a ravenous dragon, he was in fact a soldier of the Roman Empire, born to a Christian family in Palestine, and who was beheaded in AD 303 for his beliefs and for defending the rights of oppressed Christians. The origins of the legendary dragon which he is said to have slain are uncertain but almost certainly an embelishment to his story. On the one hand it seems probable that it is a metaphor - representing victory over the Devil. An alternative is that the story has become confused with the story of The Lambton Worm, another monstrous dragon killed by a warrior on his return from the crusades.
Make sure that you dont miss out on a valuable opportunity to celebrate the day. Whichever side of the bar you find yourself on, be sure to enjoy the best England has to offer on April 23rd and have a great time.
DecorThe flag of St George, a red cross on a white background is the national flag of England which has seen a resurgence of popularity in recent times. Promonent display of the flag of St George and bunting should suffice. The union jack flag should be avoided as it represents the union of the national flags of England, Scotland and Wales.
FoodFood to celebrate St Georges Day would naturally be the best of English foods - bangers and mash, pork pies, fish, chips and mushy peas. Roast beef and Yorkshire puddings.
